January 2026
Dear Partners,
When I started the Osprey Foundation in 2003, I had but an inkling of what an impactful and fulfilling journey it would become as a true “second mountain” experience. All philanthropic organizations need to make key early decisions that guide their work, such as focus areas and risk posture. One of the more important decisions is its lifespan, which, of course, also affects annual payout levels. For a number of critical reasons, I decided early on that Osprey would have a limited life and strategically “front load” its resources.
In fairness to all my partners, the time has come to announce that Osprey will cease operations as a grantmaker and impact investor as of December 31, 2029.
I understand that this news is unexpected and likely raises questions. My goal in sharing this information well in advance of the “sunset” date is to help grantees and partners effectively plan for this transition. Rest assured that all currently active or pending grants will be honored, investments will continue to maturity, and that we are prepared to navigate this transition with you as a responsive ally.
Osprey sees this wind-down timeline as an opportunity to affirm and accelerate our work together towards the relevant SDGs. Through 2029, we will continue to ensure that our collective impact lasts beyond the life of the foundation. We believe that our legacy is directly linked to the sustainability of systems and innovations that we foster together through our funding, advice, and advocacy. We fully expect to keep doing that work as a vital and active catalyst over the next four years.
It has truly been a privilege working with you during our time together. As the foundation enters its final chapter, I look forward to continuing the collaboration with each of you – the best in your fields – to promote the impact, scale, and sustainability imperative to empower services and change for those in need around the world.
Very truly yours,
Bill Clarke
President, Osprey Foundation
